Brainstorm Friend

A speech based creative partner

A research on systems that participate in creative processes. The outcome is a speech based creative partner that can take part in brainstorm sessions through associations.

We are intrigued by the latest developments in Natural Language Understanding. Amazon found great success in the release of their voice enabled Bluetooth speaker; Amazon Echo. Fast forward two years and you see Google entering the market with the Google Home. It’s supposed to be intelligent, but is it really? It might seem that way on the surface, but dig a little deeper and it actually seems quite dumb. Can such systems be creative, or at least be a useful participant in a creative process?

We built a program for the Google Home that makes use of an association network. Based on that, we wondered if visual input from the app could be a useful addition (to make moodboards for example). That’s what the second prototype is aimed at.

In the studio we’ve used the assistant to explore the scope (of a certain theme for example) during the early stages of a design process.
